President Obama ALMOST Gets One Right
63President Barack Obama made an interesting statement today. An ABC News article by Russell Goldman sports the following headline:
President Obama: America 'Not Better Off' Today than Four Years Ago
Okay, that part he got exactly right. America is definitely not better off today than it was four years ago--at least if you go by any segment of the economy other than the oil drilling boom in North Dakota. Take our personal financial situation as an example. Please.
Four years ago, in October of 2007, Pam and I lived in the gas drilling boomtown of Parachute, Colorado. We'd purchased our home--brand new--the previous March. I'd left a lucrative truck driving job that had been producing an income of $80,000 annually in order to launch an Internet-based business of my own. We had about $46,000 in capital to work with and the knowledge that if things didn't work out, I could likely go to my former employer and get my job back.
When the business in fact did not pan out--although I'd learned a lot that came in handy when I started writing Hubs--I did exactly that. Got my old job back, not even a drop in pay, and even pulled a raise a few months later. Life was rugged (water hauling on full time night shift in the offroad world of energy production is not for the faint of heart)...but life was good.
Since that time, we lost the job, lost the house to foreclosure, and are currently scrambling to figure out how to pay our taxes.
No complaining, just explaining: Not better off than four years ago. That much, Mr. President, hit the nail smack on the head.
However, there'es more to the ABC News article. For example (emphasis mine):
Calling himself an "underdog," President Obama today said the faltering economy is a drag on his Presidency and seriously impairing his chances of winning again in 2012.
Uh...Mr. President? This is where you fell through the looking glass. You got that part wrong. The faltering economy is not a drag on your Presidency. Your Presidency is a drag on the faltering economy.
And then some.
Many business owners are simply afraid to attempt any expansion of their operations (such as, for instance, hiring more people) because of the terrible uncertainty about the future. What's Obamacare going to cost me really? If I do well, do I get smashed like Gibson guitars got smashed?
Others, bold enough to attempt to grow their operations, find themselves tied hand and foot by countless new regulations or even lawsuits filed by your DOJ (Eric Holder) gang that can't shoot straight. Boeing! Boeing!
You've poured billions of our tax dollars into Green companies whose only real accomplishments have been to line a few owners' pockets with green. Not to mention shutting down oil drilling operations by fiat wherever you've been able to figure a way to pull it off.
We'll stop there for now, Mr. President. Not because there aren't many, many more examples of how your Presidency is a drag on the faltering economy, but because our readers can only take so much. I can see their eyes glazing over already.
You did get one other thing exactly right, though; we should mention that. Your chances of winning next year really are seriously impaired.
Remember in November 2012.

You got this one right on.
You nailed it, Fred! Guess who said this:
“I think the president has to recalibrate his message. You don't get people to like you by attacking them or demeaning their success. I grew up in a family of 10 kids and the first one to go to college, and I've earned my success. I've earned my right to fly private if I choose to do so. Attacking me is not going to convince me that I should take a bigger hit because I happen to be wealthy.”
- Robert Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television!
Fred smith, CEO of FedEx said this:
“Our corporate tax code, our energy policy, our trade policy and the tremendous increase in regulations are all impeding the economy's ability to grow at reasonable levels.”
Culprits?

Perfect piece of writing. What more is there to say except up and awesome!
Great, Ghost. Not much more can be said.
You are right, he is a real drag, and he is dragging us down.
Hi Ghost-
The faltering economy dragging down his presidency, This sounds pretty self-centered! The EPA lead paint laws have put a real damper on my painting business here in upstate NY. Thanks to the new lead law you can't scrape more than 6 square feet of old paint off a house without going through a course and buying about $1000 of equipment. Not only that but the job itself takes a lot more time and if its not to EPA standards your subject to huge fines. You have to warn every surrounding neighbor that you may be scraping lead paint so that they can sue you if thier kid get's attention deficit disorder 10 years from now!- Regards-WBA
The faltering economy is dragging him down??? Isn't that called putting the cart before the horse? Especially when it's supposed to be the other way around. Our leader is a prime example of leading by delusion.
Excellent synopsis, Fred.
You said it, Fred - or - HE said it - or WE said it...
Whichever - it's been said. Now it only has to happen.
Voted up across the board!
