Now, Here's The Rest Of The Star Spangled Story

The Unknown Verse

We all know the words to our national anthem, don't we?

Uh-h-h-h...turns out we don't. There's a little known second verse to The Star Spangled Banner which makes it clear that we identify ourselves as a nation of people who believe deeply in God and who believe our cause--the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness--is just. I didn't know about this "unknown verse" any more than you did; I freely admit my original ignorance. But an email from my friend Red Elk forwarded a YouTube video he'd received, a video of a former Marine who stunned a Tea Party by belting out what We the People needed to hear.

Yep. What that verse states without reservation is that while you, Mr. Radical Islamic Terrorist, may have bedrock belief in your so-called Holy War, you are not alone. We Americans have our own bedrock. When we are pushed, we push back.

Yep. What that verse states without reservation is that while you, Mr. Government-Is-God Radical Liberal, may believe people are sheep to be flocked thoroughly, you are misguided. At the deepest level, our people are Jedi knights, and the Force is strong with us.

Yep. It's time for this writer--uplifted by his own first listen to that oh-so-special video--to shut up and let you-the-reader have your own experience. Here it is.

The Star Spangled Banner, Verse Two

Notes

Note #1: The captioning refers to this as a "Fourth" verse to The Star Spangled Banner. I've identified it as a "Second" verse because the Marine who sang it identified it as such.

Note #2: Also mentioned in the captioning is the notice, "David Hedrick 4 Congress". On his website, he's quoted as follows:

"A politician can bring home the pork, but first he has to steal your pig."

The website, which identifies Mr. Hedrick as running for Congress this year in the state of Washington, describes the candidate this way:

David served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry Non-Commissioned Officer. Since he is a disabled Veteran, he can no longer defend our freedom as an active member of the armed forces, but he can protect our freedoms by serving in the United States Congress.

Note #3: Since we live in Arizona, we can't vote for David directly. We're rooting for him, though.

Now...excuse me. Gotta go watch that video one more time...and hope Sarah Palin discovers this gem in time to use it as part and parcel of her Presidential campaign in 2012.

Thanks. Just one more example of how much of our own history has been hidden from us, whether by design or by neglect.

Of course, no matter which verse of The Star Spangled Banner is being sung, my rodeo background to this day interprets the song to mean,

"Bareback riders, cinch your riggings! You're next!"

There are four verses.

In the first, a battle has raged, a new day has dawned, and our anthems first verse asks the familiar question: “Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave - O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

In the second, the question is answered, the flag can be seen waving from the far shore through the fog of war: “'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave - O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!”

In the third, the victory is rejoiced: “And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave - O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The last verse is in the video.

Jim, that makes sense. Only thing is, that video has a LOT of words in it, maybe as many as "all of the above" that you listed, so...

Either way, it's worth sharing, for sure.

Let me add the last four lines of that last verse then.

"Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Wikipedia offers the lyrics. Also interesting, (I never knew this before), the tune comes from an old British drinking song "To Anacreon In Heaven", which can be heard on YouTube if you care to go google for it.

Thanks,Jim. I did once know the tune had come from an old drinking song but hadn't thought about that in a lo-ong time. Never had known the title, though.

Larry, I'm with you all the way on that one--and I wasn't even in the Corps! Not even in Viet Nam, for that matter, though served (Army) in that era. Just another wire rat stationed in Germany, waiting to see if we all got to play cannon fodder in the Fulda Gap (in case the Eastern Bloc decided to invade).

You made my day! That's wonderful - something every American, and mind you (including me who intends to be an American within the year) would want to memorize. That second verse (or whatever verse it was) tells a lot of where America is really rooted on. God bless America!

It does indeed, Catalyst. Thanks for commenting, and congratulations on becoming an American.
