Lying Taco Bell or Lion Tacos : Of Seasoned Beef and African Cats

By

Taco Be or not Taco Be

No, no, Taco Bell is not using African lion meat in its seasoned beef tacos! It just seemed remarkable that news flashes on the same day are discussing these two taco issues. First up, the AP story:

Threats keep Arizona eatery's lion tacos off menu

TUCSON, Ariz. – An Arizona restaurant has decided to scrap plans to offer African lion meat in its tacos.

Bryan Mazon, the owner of Boca Tacos and Tequila, said Monday that his Tucson eatery has received "many threats" against the restaurant, family members, customers and vendors since he announced last week that he was taking prepaid orders for the exotic tacos.

(*Sigh*) I'm no big fan of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and I don't much care for threats, either. But really, Mr. Mazon... African lion meat? Is that even legal these days? There's a silver lining here, though--this ought to give the Arizona-haters something to scream about besides Jared Loughner shooting sprees, immigration issues, and legal challenges to Obamacare's massive power grab. Spread the wealth...right?

What's next, then? Cheetah cheeseburgers?  Leopard linguini?

Here, kitty! Kitty! Kitty!

The seasoned beef issue with Taco Bell comes from the opposite end of the spectrum: Not enough of what the company is advertising. Their problem, as declared in one lawsuit against them, is that their seasoned beef product actually contains "less than 35 percent beef". So, what? One had to wonder: The rest is, maybe... cat or something? Nope. Nothing so egregious as that. Just stuff like soy, wheat products, seasonings, etc.

(*WHEW!*)

So...that sounds like much ado about nothing. Our family still likes five-layer beefy burritos even if they are a bit less beefy than the uninitiated might believe. So there. As far as we can see, Taco Bell isn't even lying--it's not like they're using a different meat.

Guess the lawsuiters must want 'em to call their taco mixture "seasoned wheat"?!

"Leopard linguini? You've GOT to be kidding!"

Now I know why I have never walked into a Taco Bell!

Probably a good call on your part. In our area, we have two Taco Bell restaurants--one uptown and the other at the mall. Both the food and service are better at the mall. We avoid the uptown folks with considerable fervor but still don't mind the "wheat burritos" from the mall outlet one bit.

ROFL I find it hard to fathom they would actually use lion meat....is this not just an advertising ploy or were they serious??? Are they using Snagglepuss??? Maybe Yogi Bear will be their next avenue....Great Hub!!!

I think I like Taco Bell even better! I can have my serving of meat, and wheat at the same time. I love efficiency!

I almost did a spit-take at your "here, kitty, kitty, kitty"

This was informative.. and hilarious!

I loved it!!

It's for real. I did some research. Turns out certain African entrepenurs are "farming" lions like pen-raised cattle. Then, apparently, they double up sometimes by having dogs actually tree the big, hand-raised, tame cats...so that "hunters" can pay to shoot 'em full of arrows. After that, the meat is cut up and sold on the open market.

Our Taco Bell days are over which have been very infrequent, thank goodness. There are some good Spanish restaurants in our area.

Pamela99, we still like Taco Bell--at least they're just "light on the beef", not abusing big kitty cats--but yeah, there are definitely better Mexican restaurants around!

Not as cheap, though!
