Left Wing Rhetoric Patrols The Arizona Border

The Unintended Boomerang

A few months ago, we saw four beaten tracks followed by hordes of northbound illegal immigrants where a year earlier there was only one. Our home acreage sits just a mile north of Mexico, a goodly distance from Sarah Palin's Alaska, and we know when foot traffic is heavy. In recent days, however, that rush of northbounders has dwindled to a trickle.

Why?

There's always a degree of ebb and flow. When Border Patrol activity is stepped up in one area, coyotes will shift to other routes...for a while. They always come back. This time, they're not coming back as quickly. A few possible reasons:

1. More efficient Border Patrol activity. While we appreciate our BP officers to the max, this doesn't seem likely. Those folks are already stretched pretty thinly across the many miles of territory they have to cover.

2. The normal here-and-there-and-back-again cycle. This could still be the answer. We'll reserve judgement for a while yet.

3. The Left Wing Rhetoric Effect. Here's my pick of the week. Explanation follows.

Every mainstream media outlet describes SB 1070, Arizona's amazingly controversial illegal immigration law, as a "tough" new law despite its rather mild nature. Talking heads and left wing political activists from Raoul Grijalva to President OzBama himself are noted for horror stories: If you look Hispanic and so much as dare to take your kids down the block for ice cream, you could be hassled, arrested, jailed, and deported. Maybe flagged, flogged, fleegled, and flurbed. For those unable to tolerate a spooky ghost story around a campfire, the images are horrifying.

So horrifying that people in Mexico wishing to slip into the United States are staying home in droves or traveling to the California or Texas borders before crossing.

Since Pam and I keep our TV sets tuned to Fox News when we aren't watching America's Got Talent, and since I've actually read SB 1070 in full, we're pretty well inoculated against LWRD (Left Wing Rhetoric Disease) when it comes to this issue. But, despite their plunging viewership, the lamestream folks still hypnotize a lot of people. We have a friend who lives in Tucson, thinks in more or less liberal terms, and knows quite well what's being said out there. We talked on the phone tonight.

When I explained that the word "tough" in reference to SB 1070 was a misnomer, she was intrigued. When that was followed with the explanation that no one can even be asked about their immigration status unless they've already been stopped for another law enforcement reason, she was startled.

"But that's not what they're saying!"

"No. They're not. Sherri, they're lying."

That's when it hit me. The very advocates of open borders, those many individuals who believe Arizona should simply become a portion of Mexico North, have by their very vehemence begun the process of slamming the border shut! Because "their people" south of the border believe what they're saying! They trust them! SB 1070 gonna getcha! Run! Run! (English translation)

Irony In Action

Oh, there's still plenty of illegal immigration activity. The hardcore professionals in drug smuggling, human smuggling, arms smuggling--they're not going to back off. But isn't it ironic? Isn't it just so remarkable that those left wing leaders are keeping thousands upon thousands of "interested" Mexican people down there on the south side of the border, even if only for the moment?

They will of course tell you, "Hey, beloved brothers and sisters of ours, it's not us keeping you from coming on into and/or through Arizona. It's that demonic SB 1070. Blame the people in power in Phoenix." They're telling you that already.

Bottom line? Were we not living right down on the border (or close enough, anyway), were it not my habit to pay attention to tracks and trails through our property on a more or less daily basis, it's not likely we'd have noticed the drop in foot traffic. But we did notice, and we've also noticed the huge amounts of support coming to Arizona from all corners of the country. That support, like the sudden hesitation in border crossings close to our homesite, would not have come into existence without all that left wing rhetoric.

Which leaves me cocking one eyebrow and saying to all those open border, open mouth, insert foot types:

Thank you. Thank you for helping the entire United States of America realize we really do have a problem down here on the border. Your endless, repetitive accusations turned out to be irony in action. We now have plenty of reinforcements and reasonable expectations regarding true border security in the near future.

We couldn't have done it without you.

Not that I don't dislike the image, but, could it also be the heat? I mean ... could it also be the incredible temperatures you guys are getting?

Hey if you that close to the border I bet you have a great collection of back packs in storage?? You should open a stand on the river and sell them back as they cross! LOL, excellent write!

Funny how idiosyncrasy works.....trespassing never was legal now was it?? And at least you can be proud of YOUR BPers....When I read that, all I could think of was the oil fiasco....now those people down there extremely dislike hearing those two letters. Such a difference....I am so glad yours take care of you...loved this hub!!!

Speaking of walls, Tom, I kind of wonder if our border situation is the inspiration for the current narrative in the Alley Oop comic strip. King Guz forced Alley to build a border wall between Lem and Moo...then criticzed his work. Alley blew his stack and threw the King over onto the Lemmian side. Now he's stuck on the wrong side of the wall and wondering what to do about it....

Jim, it surely could be the heat. I don't claim it's a Left Wing Boomerang with CERTAINTY, though I do strongly suspect it. But it was just as hot last year, and we had foot traffic through here right straight through the summer, at least a few every night. Dubbed their main "beaten path" The Chisholm Trail, in fact.

American Romance, our night travelers seem to be of the ultra-thrifty sort in that the abandoned backpacks are all thoroughly worn out by the time they hit the ground. A stand on the river? Hm...they're well past our place before they reach the San Pedro, but maybe...:)

WMH, not everyone loves the Border Patrol type of BP, either. Like law enforcement anywhere, there are individual officers who are known to abuse their authority at times. But Pam and I've made it a point to get to know as many of our local guys and gals as possible (and of course to make it clear to them that their dangerous work is deeply appreciated). And it has paid off. Most if not all of them know very well who we are, where we live, and what we stand for--and they appreciate us as much as we appreciate them.

I think you're on to something with the left wing rhetoric. Hadn't thought about this at all. Thanks for the article.
