August 10, 2011 : What I Would Do If I Were Sarah Palin...And Why

By Ghost32

What if I were Sarah Palin? Okay, okay, when you're done either laughing yourself silly or being sick, depending on how that image strikes you, listen up; this is serious! If I were Sarah Palin at this point in time, here's what I would do. That's the thrust of this Hub, and there's a reason for it.

Bear with me a bit; this requires a bit of backstory.

My wife and I ran errands together today. It was payday, she needed to get out, and we needed groceries. But by 4:30 p.m., neither of us having slept well or for long last night, she was asleep and I needed to be. So I turned off the computer and went to take a nap.

Woke up around 7:40 p.m.

In my first seconds out of the sack, I was fantasizing about meeting Todd and Sarah Palin after Sarah had been elected and inaugurated. The meeting was in the Oval Office, between just the three of us. What I'd done to inspire President Palin to grant me this exclusive meeting wasn't specifed. It's a fantasy, okay? There are few people on the planet I'd cross the street to meet if I had to walk to the corner to do it, but the Palins are two of them.

Since it was my fantasy, I made it a nice one. "Madame President," I began--

"Call me Sarah." She stepped from behind her desk, gave me a healthy hug, then stepped back--grinning up at me--as I turned to shake hands with Todd. No words between us. None needed. Just that instant bonding between two old working hands and lifetime athletes.

Man stuff.

That's where the fantasy ended...because the real Sarah Palin (as opposed to my fantasy version) has not yet declared her candidacy for the Presidency of the United States of America. The fantasy ended, and as I dressed for the night's work (I'm often at the computer till the wee hours), I woke up enough to consciously wonder:

What if Sarah really hasn't made up her mind yet? What if she's agonizing up there in Wasilla, praying her true servant's heart out, yet so far not clear on the signs from God, whether she is meant to run or meant to sit this one out? What if she's trying and trying, struggling for clarity, yet still thinking at the end of each day, "I don't know what to do!"

That may or may not be the case, but just in case it is accurate: Sarah Palin, here's what I would do if I were you...and why.

...consider me one of the guys with a boat....
...consider me one of the guys with a boat....

We've all heard the story about the man of God who refuses to leave his home in the face of severe flooding. As the water rises, he turns away neighbors, rescue boats, even an attempt to lift him from the very roof of his home by helicopter. The gentleman finally drowns, arrives at the Pearly Gates, and is granted an audience with God. He asks,

"Lord, I have served you with all my heart for many decades. Why did you forsake me?"

"Forsake you?!" God is amazed. "I sent you a guy in a pickup truck, two boats, and a helicopter! What more did you want?!"

In a way, Sarah, that little story applies to your decision regarding the 2012 Presidential campaign, and we're characters in the tale. You are cast in the role of the man of God on the roof of your home with the floodwaters still rising. I get airsick pretty easily in helicopters, so consider me one of the guys with a boat, ready and willing to support and carry you all the way to where you need to be.

However, I'm hoping and believing that you, unlike the fellow in the story, will "get it".

Here's what needs getting:

On Fox News this evening, one talking head opined that he'd never before seen this much flux in a primary campaign season at this point in the proceedings. He admitted to extreme puzzlement, not quite sure why things are this way this year.

I know why.

Things are in flux because Sarah Palin has not yet entered the race.

And they will continue to be that way until your decision (to run or not to run) is announced.

Now, you're no dummy. Most likely, you've got that much figured out. Duh. But what you may not be clear about just yet is this:

1. If you choose to run, the entire nation will be galvanized into action. A good bit of that will be negative, of course, as the fearful left and their legions of preprogrammed zombies crank up the Palin-Pounding Paparazzi and every other attack dog they can find.

But most of it--enough to guarantee your win in 2012--will be positive. There are literally millions of us, grassroots conservatives from coast to coast and border to border, who are quietly waiting, using our time to sharpen our political axes but otherwise holding our breath. We're waiting for you to say, "Okay, I'm in." When you do say that, be sure you're strapped in--because the political power, the true Power of We the People, is going to make a mere rocket launch look downright wimpy.

2. If you decide not to run, the whole thing--the conglomeration of other Republican candidates--is going to continue sputtering along...without a lot of excitement....bleah!

Yes, in that case, someone will win the nomination. The nominee may well even defeat Obama, who is about as hard to hit politically this time around as the gym floor is to hit if you drop the basketball. But.

But the fire in the country won't be there. Oh, we've got the steely determination to see Obama booted. But it's not the same without you, and the nation will pay the price.

Yes, that's what I'm saying: If I were Sarah Palin, what I would do is declare my candidacy for President. There are times, at least in my experience, that we remain unable to know the rightness of a decision--no matter how much praying is involved--until after the decision is made. This may be one of those times.

I simply hope with all of my heart that you, unlike the goodhearted fellow in the parable who entirely overlooked God's messengers, can recognize me and this little boat-Hub as being sent to help float you clear of those floodwaters of indecision. Or that I'm wrong to worry about it in the first place, and you're not feeling that need to hesitate at all. Either alternative would be just fine. The primary campaign season is in flux, and you're the flux-fixer.

Run, Sarah, Run!!

Well done my friend. Sarah will be at the big rally that I'm speaking at Labor Day weekend in Iowa. She decided to run over a month ago. I'm told. She'll announce soon. Although I don't share your interest in her as a presidential candidate, I think she is a fine person, and a strong hub for the conservative party to build around. I'll look forward to meeting her more than any of the candidates Fred. You've been a loyal friend to her all along. I think she ought to fly right down to the fort and spend a couple of days hanging out with you. She'd be better for having done so.

Thanks, Jim. That would be pretty cool, having her drop in at the Border Fort. Even if the paparazzi got wind of her presence in the area, the Mojave green rattlesnakes hanging out there in the mesquite would handle security at no charge.

We're looking forward to your report on the Iowa rally, for sure.

I know you, and I know she wouldn't have to worry about security. Sometimes I wonder if the people at their level really have a real friend. You know, someone who didn't care whether they were president or just bagging groceries. A friend. I think she could use a bud like you.

I'll have a report okay. If I suck, I'll lie. If it's boring, I'll make something up. (laughing)

Hi Ghost...I will start by saying I truly love your Western fiction. I marvel at Tam's voice as I read each of those stories and have meant to leave a message to that effect earlier! Your apparent ease of voice amazes me and is serving as a guide in my own stumbling grasp of the art form.

Regarding politics, I think perhaps we are looking at the solution to our country's problems from two separate hemispheres and, in so doing, appear to be mirroring the national divide between blue and red. For our purposes here on HubPages I suppose that is all well and good.

I do not believe this divide portends well for the nation, however. Somewhat like Jefferson's "Fire Bell in the Night" warning? Although to delve deeper into the subject would certainly exceed the scope of my intent for this comment.

To whit: I love your fiction and I certainly hope this particular fantasy remains just that...fiction.

Good Luck in all your writing!

Jim: I suspect they do have good friends, but that's only a guess (obviously). In any event, though, I do count myself as one more whether we ever meet face to face or not.

Absolutely--if you suck, PLEASE lie convincingly! LOL! Not that I expect you'll need to do so. You've got the passion, and that's 90% of the battle (unless you're incompetent, illiterate, or incoherent, and none of those apply).

ThoughtSandwiches: I understand about the "separate hemispheres" politically. Heck, my favorite uncle AND my kid sister are over somewhere on your side of the world in that regard.

Fortunately, the western fiction does seem (as in your case) to be providing a bridge of sorts. At least, it allows a reader here and there to see hardcore right-winger little old me as actually being human, go figure!

Which has to be a good thing.

It is indeed a good thing. Recognizing each others humanity is the first step in coming together to solve these problems.

I like Palin. I also like the way she figuratively pokes a stick in the eye of the opposition. She is an unconventional politician which is part or her appeal. I also like Bachman who has much the same policies as Palin, and a friend of Palin's.Whatever the case she will do what she decides to do and it will catch many off guard.

Fred, great dream of genuine support, I kinda got one myself and it includes Palin and after the GOP picks a floater from what I see as a punch bowl full of them, I dream an independent last minute pair jump in, claiming the Tea Party as their own. It will be a smart businessman who runs with her and the position of 1st or vice don't matter just the pair I have in mind that can finance their run and get support in contributions as a second thought, I believe that they will take it home in a narrow but strong win for one and all, the guy I'm thinking isn't your cup of tea and really not mine but he wields the brain to act as a vice to Sarah that will swing all the monetary sense that the nation lacks to get into a balanced country with fiscal strength again, and that would be Trump, dust

BPop: Why not? Ya gotta dream it before you can claim it....

dahoglund: Exactly. In fact, I feel I understand her very well because she does things a whole lot the same way I do--except that she's just plain better at it by a country mile.

Dusty: That's a distinct possibility and could even actually work.

Jim: Amen, Brother!

I don't believe he's going to come close to the nomination. Been catching clips on Fox News this morning about the heckler who was planted at his Iowa campaign stop. Pundits are saying he "handled it well".

No he didn't. One bozo in a flop hat screaming insults at him, and he gets in a shouting match with the guy? "It's my turn to speak!" How third-grade is THAT?

Becky 9 months ago

I think that Sarah and Herman Cain could be a good match for the White House. He is not quite as conservative as she is and he does have the awesome business and financial experience to compliment her. They also seem to be able to look at the people's needs and see the difference between what they want and what they need. I don't think they would cut our throats to balance the budget but they would take it seriously.

Ghost32 profile image

Ghost32 Hub Author 9 months ago

I agree. Plus, it would drive Obama right up the wall. No race card to play, and Sarah in the game to kick his tail to boot--which I have to believe he would take as a personal, not merely political, affront.

Becky 9 months ago

I just can not get any enthusiasm for Michelle Bachman. I am not sure if it is personality or what, but she seems wrong for President.

Ghost32 profile image

Ghost32 Hub Author 9 months ago

I have a similar problem. I believe part of it is personality, but not all. I still rank her at #2 in my picks, behind Sarah Palin and just ahead of Herman Cain, but I'm wavering a bit. Especially since she (and several others) stated during tonight's debates that she favors a federal marriage law.

Oh, sure. Give D.C. full control of THAT important aspect of our lives. Works for me--NOT!

Becky 9 months ago

I would definitely think that was beyond their power to administrate. They can't even balance a budget. I wonder how many illegal marriages they would have. I thought they were supposed to be all for shrinking government?

Ghost32 profile image

Ghost32 Hub Author 9 months ago

Watching the debate, I got the impression it has to do with a bit of fanaticism in the hardcore Christian who is programmed to believe marriage MUST be ONLY between "one man and one woman", or else you're violating God's law and will be struck down by the Rod of Moses (or some such).

Holy Jihad, Batman!

In other words, it seems to be a weird niche in their thinking where religious ideology trumps common sense conservatism, blinding them to the consequences of such an arrangement, should it ever happen.

I admit to never having seen this one coming. But I'll be watching the issue from here on in, for sure.

Becky 9 months ago

I am a hardcore Christian and I think it is a bad idea. What is the matter with them? Giving MORE power to the government. You know we would still end up with gay marriage sooner or later and possibly even polygamy. It is the liberal mandate.

Ghost32 profile image

Ghost32 Hub Author 9 months ago

Exactly. You are, as they say, "preaching to the choir" on this one. I'm still uncrossing my eyes.

Ghost, one thing I am 100% sure of about Sarah is that she is the hottest potential POTUS candidate EVER!!!!

I have been back and forth with her .... when I read your hubs about her, I always get excited about her...IF, she gets the nomination....it may very well be the most exciting political campaign in history. Keep up the support or her and your writings.... you are edging me closer and closer to my full support on her.

btw, this hub was GREAT!...across the board votes from me.

Can't argue with your opening statement. Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Jimmy Carter--not a one of them was my type.

Thanks for the votes!
