American Heroes : Gary Locke, Antonio Diaz Chacon, and One Feisty Little Girl

By Ghost32

When I first wrote about Jon "Bones" Jones, the evidence of American heroics by Gary Locke and Antonio Diaz Chacon had yet to surface in the news. Even then, though, the idea of a series of Hubs featuring present day American heroes seemed like a good idea here at the Border Fort.

Enter Locke and Diaz.

Ambassador Gary Locke

President Barack Obama did something right when he selected Gary Locke as Ambassador to China. A former Governor of the state of Washington, Locke is the only Chinese American to serve as Governor of any state in our nation's history to date and the first Chinese American Ambassador to China. Beyond that, his first language is Chinese; he didn't begin learning English until he began school at the age of five.

Okay, so he's highly accomplished and a stunningly obvious fit for his present post. Does that make him an American hero?

No, it does not.

This does.

Ambassador Locke was photographed at SeaTac (the Seattle Tacoma International Airport) by businessman ZhauHui Tang. The photographer thought it was a nice photo, so he posted it in China.

And the crowd went wild.

As it happens, Chinese citizens are simply not used to seeing high level government folks like Gary carrying their own backpacks, let alone ordering their own coffee. Are you kidding me? Gotta admire that!

And they did. Uh...do.

One more ugly American? Nuh-unh!! Gary Locke is making the USA look good! Not only that, but he's doing it before even officially taking up the duties of Ambassador; he was barely on his way to China when the snapshot was taken. All frugality, no waste of taxpayer dollars whatsoever. With the runaway tax-and-spend train running full throttle over the cliff in D.C., the man from the other Washington qualifies as an American Hero and then some.

Mechanic Antonio Diaz Chacon

Albequerque, New Mexico. Twenty-four year old Antonio Diaz Chacon, a mechanic and the father of two little girls, had to use the washing machine at his mother-in-law's home. Antonio does not speak English well (yet), but the language of abduction needs no words. When he witnessed a little girl from the neighborhood being grabbed right off the sidewalk and thrown into a blue van, he knew what he was seeing.

The blue van sped away. Diaz Chacon immediately gave chase in his black pickup truck.

Between black and blue, guess who won that one?

When the van crashed and the driver bailed out, the pursuer did finally slow down long enough to wonder, "What if he has a gun?"

It did not come to that. The child snatcher ran. The mechanic--whose wife was already in a panic, worrying he'd end up in a pine box--rushed up to the wrecked van, told the little girl he'd take her home...and took her home.

Happy endings all around.

Except for the kidnapper, one Phillip Garcia, age 29. Garcia sits in jail as we speak, wisely refusing to talk to detectives and waiting for the magical appearance of an Albuquerque attorney who will even consider taking his case.

Public Defender's Office, anyone?

Antonio Diaz Chacon, my Spanish is no better than your English, but I assure you: You are on the short list of people whose hand I would like to shake, and you are a true American hero.

One Feisty Little Girl

The young girl who was abducted by Phillip Garcia, despite being rescued by Antonio Diaz Chacon, also deserves an American Hero Award for the following reasons:

1. When the bad man put his hand over her mouth, she bit him.

2. She was able to describe the van's interior--including the lack of any back seats--accurately. No defense attorney will be able to impeach her testimony. This feisty little girl is a powerful witness against her abductor, ensuring Garcia's future imprisonment for a good long time.

3. Despite rattling around inside the van during the crash and having been grabbed so hard that bruises almost immediately appeared on her chest and back, she has her priorities straight. Her deepest concern was for the tostadas, which were left behind in the van when Diaz Chacon took her home.

Great! The Comments section is working again, no more than thirty minutes after I asked the Team (via email) to check it out. Which means one of two things:

1. They're FAST.

or

2. It was already working when they got around to checking, and I look like a total idiot.

If it's #1: Thanks, y'all!

If it's #2: Sorry, y'all!

LOL!

Ghost...Thanks for hoisting a mug to heroes who don't go all over telling folks they are heroes. They just are. I like an Ambassador that buys his own coffee. Yep.

Me too.

Weird. This section glitched again. Then I tried approving your comment before posting mine, and that worked. No clue if there's a real connection....

Becky 9 months ago

I know I posted here earlier. It WAS down.

Great hub on some everyday heroes. Just everyday people doing the stuff they do best.

Thanks for checking back in, Becky. Now that I know you're up to speed on what happened, I can delete the Hub section explaining why your first comment disappeared.

My favorite part of the whole day's news is the bit about the girl biting her abductor. YES!

Thanks for the refreshing good news Ghost 32. I've always thought we need to have a good news channel on tv to compete with all the bad news that can be found so easily if that's what you're looking for! It really is refreshing and I appreciate your sharing it.

Becky 9 months ago

Biting is sometimes the best defense. They will sometimes let go long enough to get away. She did good. My little girl could take down her brothers at 3 ans they were 12 an 13. She has kept up with her self defense and still takes them down. I have taught her a few more things. The best defense she has though, we have been discouraging for years. Her mouth. She has a heck of a set of lungs and can scream very loud. She can also be a bit of a b@%#&. We have told her that if someone took her, they would bring her back. SOON!!!

Sorry, can't spell or type today.

kimh039: Your appreciation is appreciated. Really.

Becky: Your daughter continues to sound more than a bit like Pam.

Accurate spelling or typing never a requirement in the Comments on my Hubs. If you doubt this, check out Red Elk at

I have read Red Elks comments. I do hold myself to a high standard though, as I do know how to use proper spelling and grammar.

Actually, I thought you had read his stuff. :)

Yes, I know you comprehend spelling and grammar.

Give a gal an out, will she take it?

My ex #5 would, for sure. During our amicable divorce discussions (we eventually fired our lawyers, toward the end), I once observed that it seemed as though she'd take the whole enchilada (including our then multimillion dollar business, lock, stock and barrel) if I gave her the chance.

"Of course," she replied (over the phone) in surprise. "Wouldn't you."

"No," I replied. "I would not."

Wups. Brain wander. Early Alzheimer's. Back to the Hub topic, which was...huh.

Forgot.

Some of us have honor and accept blame when we are in the wrong. It would be better if we all did. Thank you for the out though.

What a wonderful story of Heroism.

From experience I know Chinese to be simple people who don't like to depend on other people no matter how much money that have, my ex-boss is prime suspect. She is Harvard grad, Vice President for our Power Company and she likes to do everything herself....really.

Diaz is a goody two shoe who deserves the title. He is a good guy. I am glad they didn't mistakenly think he did the kidnapping.

Cardisa: Good point on Diaz Chacon, but it sounds like the little girl was pretty clear on how things went down. She'd have cleared him in a heartbeat.

It's wonderful to hear some good news. Ya know? Thanks for a great read! But, then again, I always do enjoy your hubs. Very engaging!!!

Now this was the kind of news, Fred, that I love to read and these three are true, inspiring American heroes. Thank you for recognizing them and introducing them to the rest of us in such an entertaining way.
